Awards

SMNZI operates three categories of award

  • Postgraduate Conference Prize (Occasional)
  • Undergraduate Student Prize (Annual)
  • Rick Cooper Award (Occasional)

Postgraduate Conference Prize

The prize is awarded for the best materials presentation at New Zealand Engineering conferences which include a significant material component.

Some support as appropriate is given from time to time for research students presenting papers to a conference.

There have not been any recent conferences which included appropriate sessions but we hope a materials engineering conference will take place in New Zealand in the near future.

Final Year Undergraduate Student Prize

As a tradition, SMNZI awards annual prizes to graduating materials engineering students. Award winners are students who are judged to be the first and second highest achievers in their graduating Bachelor degree year.

These students are either selected on the basis of overall marks achieved in coursework, or selected by a panel for the best presentation of a final year materials project.

The Rick Cooper Award

This prestigious medal honouring Rick Cooper’s memory, is presented to a nominated member who has, in the opinion of a selection committee, earned a place of significant contribution to Materials Science or Engineering in New Zealand.
